NEW YEAR, NEW YOU, NEW HEALTH GOALS FOR 2025.
New Year, New You, New Goals. Setting Realistic Health Goals for 2025
As we enter the holiday season, many of us start reflecting on the past year and thinking about the changes we want to make in the new one. For most, the top of the list is improving health and fitness. Setting New Year’s resolutions can be a great way to kick start healthier habits, but the key to long term success is setting realistic, achievable goals.
As an Accredited Exercise Physiologist, I’m here to help you create and stick to a fitness plan that prioritises your health and well being. Whether your goals involve getting stronger, increasing mobility, or simply staying active, here’s how to set yourself up for success in the new year.
1. Start Small and Be Specific
It’s easy to get excited about making big changes, but starting too fast can lead to burnout. Break down larger goals into smaller, manageable steps. Instead of saying, “i’ll exercise every day”, start by exercising once or twice a week. This way, you’ll stay motivated without overwhelming yourself. Gradually add more days as you build more adherence.
2. Focus on Enjoyable Activities
Consistency is key, and the best way to ensure you stick with your plan is by doing exercises you enjoy. Whether it’s cycling, swimming, yoga, or even walking with a friend, find activities that make you happy. This will not only help you maintain motivation but also turn exercise into a habit rather than a chore.
3. Set Measurable Goals
Vague resolutions like “getting fit” don’t give you a clear path to follow. Make your goals measurable, like “I want to run 5km by April” or “I’ll aim to increase my strength by lifting weights twice a week.” This allows you to track progress and celebrate small victories along the way.
4. Prioritise Mental Health and Well-being
Exercise is not just about physical health, it has tremendous benefits for your mental wellbeing too. Engaging in regular physical activity can reduce stress, improve mood, and boost energy levels. This New Year, aim to focus on the mental benefits of movement, using exercise as a tool to relax and unwind, especially during busy or stressful periods.
5. Seek Professional Guidance
If you’re new to exercising or managing a health condition, working with an Exercise Physiologist can ensure that you’re on the right track. Tailored exercise programs based on your fitness level, health history, and goals. We also educate you on injury prevention, helping you stay consistent and safe in your fitness journey.
6. Make Recovery a Priority
Rest and recovery are often overlooked but are crucial for long term success. Make sure you allow time for your muscles and joints to recover, especially if you're increasing your workout intensity. This will help you avoid burnout and reduce the risk of injury, so you can keep moving toward your goals.
7. Track Your Progress
Keep a journal or use a fitness app to track your workouts, diet, and how you’re feeling each day. This will help you see how far you’ve come and make any necessary adjustments to your plan. It’s also a great way to stay motivated by seeing measurable progress over time.
8. Celebrate the Wins
Big or small, celebrate every achievement ! Whether you’re lifting heavier weights, feeling less joint pain, or simply making it through a week of consistent workouts, acknowledging your progress will help you stay motivated and focused on your journey.
9. Set Realistic Expectations
Remember, health and fitness are lifelong commitments. Quick fixes or drastic changes can lead to disappointment. Focus on gradual, sustainable progress, and don’t be discouraged by setbacks. Be patient with yourself and take the time to build a routine that you can maintain long after the holiday season.
