Neck Pain

Common Causes of Neck Pain and Exercises to Help

Neck pain is extremely common. It can cause stiffness, headaches and trouble turning your head. Fortunately, most cases improve with the right movement and habits. Once you understand the cause, relief becomes much easier.

Common Causes of Neck Pain

Poor posture. Hours at a desk or on a phone strain the neck. Over time, the muscles tire and tighten.

Muscle strain. Sleeping awkwardly, lifting heavy items or moving suddenly can overstretch your neck muscles. Pain usually follows within hours.

Stress and tension. Many people hold stress in their shoulders. Consequently, the neck muscles stay tense throughout the day.

Lack of movement. Staying still for long periods stiffens the joints. In addition, weak upper-back muscles force the neck to work harder.

Injury. Whiplash and falls can damage the soft tissues of the neck. Because these injuries can be serious, they need proper assessment.

When to See a Doctor First

Some symptoms need prompt medical attention. These include severe pain after trauma, numbness or weakness in the arms, fever, or ongoing dizziness. Otherwise, gentle exercise is generally safe and helpful.

Exercises to Help Neck Pain

This resets your spine and neck position

1. Chin tucks.

Sit tall and gently draw your chin straight back, as if making a double chin. Hold for five seconds. Repeat ten times. This strengthens the deep neck muscles.

2. Neck rotations.

Turn your head slowly to one side until you feel a mild stretch. Then return to centre and turn the other way. Repeat five times each sid

3. Upper trapezius stretch.

Tilt your ear toward your shoulder. Hold for 20 to 30 seconds, then switch sides. This releases tension in the side of the neck.

4. Shoulder blade squeezes.

Pull your shoulder blades back and down. Hold for five seconds. Ten repetitions build upper-back strength and support better posture.

5. Levator scapulae stretch.

Turn your head 45 degrees, and then look down toward your armpit. Hold gently for 20 seconds. This stretch targets a common source of tightness.

Everyday Habits That Protect Your Neck

Exercise works best alongside good habits. For example, raise your screen to eye level. Also, take a short movement break every 30 minutes. Finally, choose a pillow that keeps your neck neutral while you sleep.

How an Exercise Physiologist Can Help

Persistent neck pain often involves several contributing factors. An exercise physiologist assesses your posture, strength and movement patterns. Then they create a personalised plan that targets the true cause. Therefore, relief lasts longer than it does with stretching alone.
